Brush with celebrity

I walked around the corner of a building in Toronto today, and almost smacked right into... this guy.

I'll give you all a moment to recover.

Rex Murphy! Wow. Last week in Ottawa, I was in the Library of Parliament, which is the place into which Rex jams himself and 100 of his CBC technician pals so he can give witty colour commentary on election night. I was even trying to figure out on which balcony Rex parks to do his segment.

Hmmm...that was on July 11th. You met up with him just three days later. Coincidence?

Frank T. would call this "brushness with greatness", which acquired a great sheen to it as a slogan when Frank and I, one day in the late 1980's, walked into the Dalplex, and Frank's gym bag nearly decapitiated Tory MLA and cabinet minister Terry Donahoe.

I don't know if that's as great a brushness as Frank seeing Joe Flaherty at McDonald's.

I think my favourite brushness with greatness story is the time Paul K. and Peter B. entered Domus on Seymour Street in Halifax (the bar/hangout/residence of the Dal Law School), headed downstairs to the private, all-night bar, and witnessed, over in a corner, former Saskatchewan Premier Alan Blakeney and Supreme Court Justice John Sopinka sitting at a table, getting waxed. It was about 4:00 a.m.

And not only did Frank see Joe Flaherty at McDonald's, but Flaherty was sitting by himself and was chowing down a Big Mac.
