It's a wonder we all survived our childhood


I remember my brother-in-law's sister-in-law telling me about a toy she got when she was a young girl. It was a toy iron -- you plugged into the wall, and it got really hot! Now that's a great toy for kids!

Lawn darts were the best. They had a million uses, none of which involved playing the actual game.

Whipping them overhanded at a pine fence was pretty cool. Also, you could take them apart and re-deploy the long tubular part (the handle) between the fins and the tip. This made them ridiculously unstable.

I had many happy hours tossing them straight up into the air and then just barely dodging out of the way as they came back to earth. Fantastic!

Of course, nothing sold on the open market was quite as lethal as the homemade boomerang I built in my basement. Educational and criminally hazardous.
